Competition SIGN-UP
- There are no competition fees.
- All competitions are "mix and match." Mix and Match means competitors are randomly paired with other competitors. The purpose of random pairing is to test the competitiors' abilities to lead and follow.
- If you have won 1st place in a beginner level (a.k.a newcomer) collegiate shag competition in the past, you should not compete in our beginner competition. The same principle applies to those who have won 1st in an amateur (a.k.a intermediate) collegiate shag competition.
- Sign-up opens at 7:00 pm on Friday at the registration desk.
- Sign-up closes at 5:00 pm on Saturday.
- Sign-up is first-come, first-served.
- Equal lead and follow ratios will be enforced via sign-up sheets.
- Those who end up at the bottom of the sign-up sheet and who don't initially make the competitor's roster (due to unequal ratios of sign-ups) will be put on a waiting list.
- Note: Folks on the waiting list should stay near the front desk between 7:00 and 7:30 on Saturday in case someone on the roster drops or fails to show up.
Competition CHECK-IN and PRELIMS
- Competitor check-in for both prelims starts at 7:00 pm on Saturday night.
- Bib numbers must be picked up in person at the front desk during check-in.
- If you do not check in by 7:20 pm, Saturday night, your place in the competition may be given to someone on the waiting list.
- You may not check in on behalf of someone else or pick up their bib for them.
- At 7:35 pm, after the check-in is complete, competitors and judges will walk to Brigid's Loft for the competitor's metting; this is also where the prelims will be held, starting at 8:00 pm.
Competition Finals
- For competition finals, competitors should make their way to the stage 5 minutes prior to the competition start time. Ryan and/or the MC will be there doing a head count.
- Finalists who fail to show up at that time may automatically forfeit their spot to an alternate.
- We have a moderate but mandatory dress code for competition finals:
- Please don't wear atheletic shoes (cross-trainers, cleats, running shoes, etc.); Keds, Vans, All-Stars, etc. are fine.
- Please don't wear graphic apparel (e.g., t-shirts with silk-screened images, etc.) or garments that prominently feature words or brand logos; stripes are fine.
Competition Level Descriptions
- The number and type of competition divisions we have each year will depend upon registartion numbers, the opinions of staff, and expressed interest. The selection is subject to change up to the week of the event.
- Newcomer division - Open to anyone who has never competed in a Collegiate Shag competition before and dancers who have competed, but never placed in a newcomer competition.
- Amateur/Intermediate division - Dancers who have been dancing Collegiate Shag for 1-2 years and, typically, those who have won or placed in a Newcomer division. This could also be someone who has been dancing Collegiate Shag for numerous years, but never entered a competition - those dancers can skip the Newcomer division and go straight to this level.
- Advanced division - At this level, competitors have usually been dancing Collegiate Shag for at least 5 years and have most likely placed and/or won at least one Collegiate Shag amateur or intermediate division. Dancers who frequent competitions at this level are typically seasoned dance instructors as well though they are usually not full-time professionals.
